I am considering buying an iPhone and switching from Alltel to AT&T to spawn it work. Can I hold my older #?

I would like to purchase an iPhone and start a up to date plan and everything with AT&T. However, I currently enjoy a plan with Alltel, and I want to hold my same phone number after I switch. Is this possible?
