Doing this will make your music nouns horrible, not just because it's going to a lower bitrate, but because it's coming from an already highly-compressed source.
But, you can use iTunes. Go to edit-preferences, advanced tab, import tab, and set the bitrate lower than what you have it at presently.
Then, select your files, right-click, and click convert selection.
The best piece to do would be to re-rip the music from your CDs at a lower bitrate.
switching it from mp3 to avi (or vice versa) will make change in size..
including other music files (extensions)
