I own used different headphones near my ipod. As long as it fits into the jack it should be fine. You might want to check apple.com. I've never heard of earpiece harming battery.
you can use any headphone that fits into the head phone jack on the iPod. my son have a big Bose headset and i don't think he have any battery issues!!
