Can someone facilitate explain the ipod to me?

okay, i am thinking of getting my husband an ipod for our anniversary. the thing is, i enjoy no idea what i'm doing when i'm shopping for one. i suggest, i get the in one piece 2GB is 960 songs, okay, but i don't know what i'm doing after that. when i get it do i enjoy to buy the itunes card also or if i have itunes on my computer, can i choose songs past its sell-by date of there? he doesn't hold itunes on his computer at all, so if he downloads it and a entry like limewire, can he do it that style or do i always own to buy the itunes card? and what does anyone suggest is the best ipod to get? i obligation something that is really well brought-up, i have to distribute it to iraq. i am in the intact myspace, computer, xbox circle, but i guess i got disappeared behind when the ipod HGV drove through. any help is appreciated. thank you.
