How might I diffuse night light bulbs aimed towards a crowd so it still throws standard lamp resourcefully but doesn't blind them?

I have created a system where on earth I use a red, green and blue light bulb to sort of create an "any color LED" effect using faders and whatnot. Now I was hoping to use it at a do to create general wash of light but I don't wanna blind individuals who look into it so i was hoping to diffuse the wispy and still get the clean of color I'm looking for. What kind of matter would do that?

Answers:    use the plastic covers that go over flourescent bulb lights.. they're the size that would fit into a suspended ceiling, you should be capable of cut them to any size you want.. Menards would have them
For a quick-fix you could place a coffee filter over a street lamp...but don't get it too close and not over a big wattage bulb. Remember, the bulb is hot, so, low wattage....
