I bought a 500mW Transmit (tx) power 2 Way UHF radio today that specifies a 3km length.?

My question is, would I be capable of receive communications further away than 3km as I would have thought receive gift is limited to the antenna and NOT the transmit power?

Cheers.

Answers:    The advertisement typically overstate the range these radios are skilful of. You will be very lucky to achieve 3 km or even close to it. You would be able to receive a signal to be precise at a greater distance if the tx power is stronger. The receive ability is a mix of heir sensitivity, receiver selectivity, antenna size, and tx power. A better the antenna for any tx or rx will allow greater range. Better rx sensitivity will allow greater capacity, etc. Greater power will allow for greater range but you stipulation to increase power by 4 times to double the range.
Can you attach an external antenna ?? If so, angle one high and I'm sure you can seize better distance... also if you use a directional antenna it will help.
