I own tried changing the video output cords but still no difference...

Answers:    Normally the ashen is video, red and white are the left an d right audeo channel. You need to place the recorder back the TV. You need the input from the cable to step into your dvr and then to the TV. The DVR requirements a tuner to record TV shows. The with the sole purpose way around this is a cable box or VCR next to a tuner in it. The TV act as a monitor then and the DVR, cable box or VCR act as a tuner.
The hdml cable is video & sound for hdtv -a elevated quality signal. It appears that you hold the output side of the DVD recorder connected OK, but you may not have the video input to the DVD coming from the correct source.

The pallid jacks are baseband composite video - NTSC (standard definition). You should connect this to a yellow jack on your dvd recorder - but better to use s-video instead if you enjoy that available - it is higher feature that composite - but not HD. Use one or the other - not both.

If you have a satellite beneficiary or cable box, feed the inputs to the recorder from the cable/satellite box, not the TV. On your recorder, the input jacks are usually clustered: near should be red, white & yellow RCAs along near a 4 pin DIN connector (S-video) all corresponding to an AV input.

If you hold analog cable, put a Tee adapter in the coaxial cable and run a co-ax to to the DVD recorder for input. This arrangement will allow you to view one channel while soundtrack to another, but nothing will be HD.
