I realize already that all your tubular shaped household battery are DC. But those rectangle shaped ones with the Plus and Minus on top that ancestors dare you to put your tongue on are AC right? Or am I misinformed.
Answers: As already indicated by the other answers you are misinformed ! DC it is and it only give a small tingle to the tongue !

A generator is required to engender AC.
9 volts is 9 volts. It ain't gonna hurt you. And yes, ALL battery's (stored energy) are DC (Direct Current).
