Answers:    A few things I really needed to hear from you and some I need to speak about you as well...

HOW hoary? 200 watts means seriously of different things depending on this.

200 watts RMS (a rating based on CONTINUOUS average power precincts at so much wattage into x-xxxxx Hz with x% distortion etc, which is bonafide and a solid 200 watts...

...or 200 watts PMPO or mount maximum power output etc. usually base on the maximum power put out at any time or rank of distortion for a fraction of a second. Any theory calling this 200 watts so looks lovely printed on the stereo cabinet but quacks like a unquestionable cartoon duck.

By TWO CHANNELS it vehicle LEFT and RIGHT. A and B are stereo and copied on B unless it is a true Dolby Surround or 5.1 type home theater type amp, which I will cover in a minute. If you use A and B simultaneously the power will be halve to each couple...the arrangement, similar to a "Hafler" setup simply CANNOT pump 200W into BOTH as that violates adjectives the laws of conservation of gusto Sir Isaac Newton thought up whilst perfecting those marvelous fig bar!

(Ahem... a dramatic Fib but I AM the author here)

Likewise it really depends on where the "200 watts" phrase come to you. Those laws Sir Isaac found front us to the shortcut for finding TRUE amplifier power capability.

Basically, power per trench, driving 2 channels equals roughly 1/4 the stated total power consumption of the set by a complicated looking mathematical formula but works out to almost 25% into 2 and 1/2 that into 4.

If you actually hold 200 watts total CONSUMPTION listed on the posterior then you can digit 50 watts per channel or 25 near 4. Many people verbs the power consumption figure as the in fact amplifier power rating and IT IS NOT. Moreover, most manufacturers enjoy NEVER listed the amp power directly on the set. It's not awfully dignified so it is reserved for DECALS used to sell the set that are typically removed after you buy them.

Not various Sonys were experienced of an honest 200 watts per channel prior to the home theater days of today but amp technology have changed a lot contained by 30 years. Here's what a Dolby Prologic 5.1 receiver can be expected to do, as built and claimed by Sony (I owned this set so I know)..

140 watts TOTAL: 70 FRONT (L+R stereo pair), 10 REAR (Surround channel and they are mono for the most part, handling large frequency details only) and the other sixty watts are for the center and subwoofers. In A+B regular split stereo they are more like a 2-channel set. These sets hold separate amps for each speaker set, unlike convential amps so the formula is presently all the channel added in total and usually not RMS or weighted different within surround mode than stereo.

Sony recommends AGAINST using A+B beside surround as it will cause amp troubles and probable end of either A or B and possible both do to stress on the set's amplifiers.

IF you own a 1970s model with V-FET printed on it or containing them or an ES model from the 1980s-up, you hold a MUCH better stereo than the newer one.

On to the suggestion of another answer. It has some merit to it but I suppose there may be an even better solution that you weren't pondering.

A lower power but larger woofer size and larger cabinet would be seriously better than a new amp and here is my reasoning. I prefer a 10 to 12 inch woofer surrounded by an efficient cabinet effective on creating higher nouns pressure levels to smaller ones. Four of them is more than satisfactory to get a resonance ticket and fill a small house. 15 inches is overkill for any more than a stereo set of two and on top of that the prices for most obedient 15's and some very nice 12's, freshly the woofers are silly on eBay etc. *(the 'sub' part is really a maketing article as they ARE woofers with smaller amount midrange presence if the are subs and many empire are sloppy there also and fall over into calling large midbass and fullrange speakers "subwoofers").

You can advance speakers bass response to a degree buy accumulation filling (common fiberglass insulation and other fiberous materials trailing the woofer) or changing the woofer to a more modernized model, but keep the wattage rating close to that of the innovative and the impedance (in ohms) as similar of the same as you can. Putting those 500 or 1200 watt subwoofer things that are designed for cars because they are 2-4 ohms usually will end of departure you sad if you are not practical (or if you ARE even) and kill a accurate amplifier!

And WHY would you do that? My hunch from reading the question over and over is that you considered necessary surround sound, possibly for a hobby setup even. You are also mistaking biamping form adding speakers. BI-AMPING is the technique of sepatately amplifying bass and treble and while it have some good advantages it doesn't seem to be to me that is what you want.

There are greatly of good elder speakers and amps/receivers out there, conceivably at a thrift or pawn, on eBay, I don`t know something a friend knows around that you could use if your amp is really inadequite to you. Most 90's and 2000 era electronics like you would go and get at Wal-mart or a chain store probably cannot compare to worthy older or even some more traditional stuff you can find for a great price, some of it similar to Harman Kardon and Onkyo or especially Yamaha and you can find HK and Onkyo in some Radio Shacks in a minute and then. I would buy Pioneer SX-3700/3800/3900 surrounded by good condition as while they are lone stereo they are very economically built and attractive and also not very expensive recurrently. They are also very durable and enjoy two tape monitors for dubbing, auxilliaries and a great phono stage beside CD-like quietness.

If you have an ES series amp or a classic 1970s esp. near V-FET, get better speakers, fix the amp or supply it as you have $$ if you want to do that. It will vend for a good price.

More power does not equal better as much as more well-run drivers/cabinets or better setups. Try finding books or sites such as audiokarma.org and Yahoo groups like Classic Stereo, Budget Audio and others as they will lend a hand you a lot. Get the mini for L and R channel and use Sony amp for sub-woofer!!
