AVI, MP4,WAV, formats on portable device?

All these formats play on my old laptop. Why is it that the up-to-the-minute portable gadgets, whether its the ipod or other can not play some of these ? Is the portable video/music player technology not ripe nonetheless ?

The portable device only can play MP4 format. If you want to play AVI, WAV video on your portable devide, you need to convert them to mp4 video using a converter:
