Can you compress an avi directory to fit on a dvd?

to put avi files on a dvd i use Sonic MyDVD but i have an avi folder that is 96 minutes and when i give it to a sonicmydvd project it says in attendance is not enough space. but a dvd can fit 2 or more hours on it so why dont my 96-min video fit??
is nearby another way i can put this database on a dvd??
