I replaced the battery beside a new one, cleaned it...any suggestions? I know I could grasp a new one but that would be my end resort.

Is it cordless? The bell part also take batteries, probably D cell and maybe even a 9-volt, try replacing those.
Another piece, if it's a cordless, it operates on radio frequencies, and possibly something is now generate interference that didn't before. Try mounting the bell as close to the button as possible - if it's across the room or down the lecture theatre, it may be too far to work.
