Answers:    No, you can't play hd-dvd or blu-ray on a regular dvd player. You need a blu-ray player to play blu-ray discs and an hd-dvd player for hd-dvd discs.

Blu-ray players cost $300+ including the PS3, but they enjoy the support from most electronics companies including: Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Pioneer, etc. They also have the exclusive studio backings of: Sony Pictures, MGM, Lionsgate, Warner Bros.(starting May 2008), and Disney.

HD-DVD players cost $150+. They are back by Microsoft and Toshiba, and they have the exclusive finance of: Universal, and Paramount (but they are supported by Warner Bros. until May 2008).

But unless you have an HDTV, it will be no different than average DVD's. So if you have a non-HDTV, don't rubbish your money buying hi-def discs and players that will mean no difference to you.
You can't not play a HD-DVD disc or Blu-Ray disc on a standard dvd player. HD-DVD disc can solely be played on a high defintion HD-DVD player. It cost in the order of $179.00 or higher depending on the model. It is back by Microsoft and Toshiba.

Blu-Ray disc can only be played on a large definition Blu-Ray dvd player. It cost about $300 or more depending on the model. It is back by Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, Sharp and JVC.

Both are different formats and can be played only on their dvd players. Blu-Ray currently hold the most movies beside many movie studios supporting their format more than HD-DVD.
the DVD palyer should play the HD dvd but unless you own a HD TV you will see no diffrance in picture point. Blu-Ray however only works on Blu-Ray players and PS3s.
