Voltage reducer - hear of it?

Has anyone ever heard of a voltage reducer? It's a device I believe you are supposed to plug your appliances into to release on electricity. I went to home depot today and they never hear of it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answers:    Voltage reducers (step-down transformers) don't do the slightest bit to 'save' electricity. They are a complete idle away of money and actually do more reduce to rubble than good.
You'll be using like amount of electric current, but the voltage reduced is converted to HEAT either at the converter or at the appliance. Plus, appliances are built to operate most resourcefully at the rated voltages. Things approaching motors can overheat and destroy themselves running at too low a voltage.

Voltage converters are just necessary when the appliance need to be run needs a lower voltage than that which is self supplied. (Too much voltage= overheating as well).
Think so.
