AC current can easily be "stepped up" or "stepped down" to different voltages using a TRANSFORMER. This wonderful piece allows your household AC to be converted to a lower voltage, then well converted to DC using a RECTIFIER (and a small filtering circuit), so that you can use your household AC to operate a plethora of lower-voltaged DC devices. These are those little black boxes that plug contained by the wall between your household AC and, for example, a cordless phone or recharegeable cordless vacuum cleaner.
DC, on the other hand, is not well converted to other voltages. Yes, you can use a small circuit to get a LOWER DC voltage; but you would involve a very complex circuit to try to carry a higher DC voltage.
