They enjoy an adjustable timer built in that let you set how long they stay on after sensing motion. Most also let you turn it on using the switch -- but I'm not sure if it turns past its sell-by date automatically with the instruction manual switch (may vary by mfgr).
Modifying something might be cheaper, but if there's a fire, your insurance company will find the mod and won't compensate you, since you didn't have something that be code approved. Cheaper in the long run to walk with a switch close to this that already has adjectives of the required safety approvals...
