An mp3 player is a digital player that plays mp3 files (and normally others) and can be made by anyone (apple, Sony, Creative)

Ipod though has become the heading most people use when refering to mp3 players close to hoover when refering to vacum cleaners.
ipods are way easier and better but mp-3 players are cheaper
