ok so i have a toshiba satellite notebook and it has an s cable port, although my tv doesn't own an s cable port, the dvd player does have one and i be thinking that this would be possible but when i hooked it up nothing come up on the screen, i don't know where on earth to go to on my computer to rework the settings to watch my notebook monitor on the tv, i understand it wants to be configured i just don't know where on earth to go to vary it, thanks!
Answers: The DVD player is usually an output-only device, so you probably cannot connect your laptop to the TV through the DVD. I don't know what genus of DVD player you have, so I cannot be sure.

The laptop's S-video port is output, not input, so you can't use it to connect the DVD to the computer. You can add a video-capture to it to do that:
