I have lots of colossal classes and tried a Panasonic recorder that I placed about six foot from the instructor- and the playback was still solitary semi-audible. I need something that picks up a speaker's voice clearly from a distance, preferably from the support of an auditorium, without man overpowered by background rumbling like papers russling, coughing etc. I hold an Ipod and really don't care if the recorder can play or hold music. I do however want something near software/software compatability to convert and store the voice files on my computer. Reasonable amount of storage hours is also a must, so that I can keep several days of lectures on the recorder if I don't own time to put them onto my computer. I have hear that Olympus DM-10 and DS-30 are good, but from their product descriptions they come across to be made for close range dictation.
Above adjectives, the playback sound element is most important. Any back with this is most appreciated. Thanks!
Answers: Some hold a "conference/dication" switch to change microphone sensitivity. However, the problem near trying to record surrounded by a classroom or auditorium setting is that you will also record more reverberation, such as air conditioning vent, doors opening and closing, coughing, etc. A better solution would be to gain a "shotgun" microphone, which is very directional and can be pointed at the source of the nouns you want to record. Sennheiser make top-of-the-line shotgun mics. You can mount the mic on a mini tripod for cameras. If, even with the shotgun mic, you stipulation more gain, you can add a preamplifier between the mic and the recorder to increase your compass.
