Ipod touch ((internet))?

Im getting the ipod touch in a few days but i be woundering about the internet on it.
Do you hold to be in a wifi zone?

Is it similar to a cell phone internet and it will work anywhere?

my friend have an ipod touch and he goes on the internet surrounded by skool i guess it takes the wireless connedtion from the skool
