Do any GPS unit enjoy map that can be upgraded for free?

I'm interested in getting a GPS element for my girlfriend. One of our worries is outdated maps and I'd approaching to find one with map updates you can download for free.

Bonus points if anyone can sustain steer me towards a good one within the sub $200 price range.

Answers:    I use the Tom Tom One 3rd Edition (on mart lately for about $150.00) and I approaching it (it uses Tele Atlas, the others use NavTeq -- I've seen different posts that influence each one is better). Before I bought mine, I did search and saw very few desperate comments about it -- mostly that near should be more information in the hasty start guide (the full manual is on their website -- not surrounded by the package). The unit is prepared to use out of the box without updating, and the map are detailed -- I even found one-lane gravel roads were name on the TomTom maps. If you want to, you can slickly connect this GPS to your computer and download updates from TomTom for free (as often as you want -- every week if you want to). They may charge after 1 year but I don't know for sure. In October a consumer magazine rate it a best buy after testing over a dozen unit (there were several unit that were rate higher -- but they be more expensive).

It is both powered and charged by the car cigarette lighter or computer USB cable (included); the GPS is small enought to fit contained by your pocket and will run for several hours on the internal battery (longer if you turn the brightness and volume down / off). The speaker (you own a choice of several different voices) is clear and loud -- there is also a setting to hold the volume increase as your speed increases. Businesses are included in the points of interests (gas stations, saloon dealers, hospitals, parks, police and fire stations, etc.); you can select to show one type of interest, or as copious as you like. You can set it to tip off you (with a choice of sounds) when you get close at hand one or more of these points of interests. It can tell you how rapid you're driving, and can warn you if you speed. When you plan a route, you can hold it avoid toll roads, or whatever. There is a "where on earth am I" button that finds you on the map with a moment ago that one touch. You can enter a PIN number so a thief won't know how to use it.

This unit doesn't speak the name of the streets (the more expensive ones do). This unit will influence "turn left 1/4 mile" and not "turn departed 1/4 mile at Main Street." Also, as with any GPS brand, near will be some minor mistakes on the maps, but on this element you can correct errors, and then you hold a choice to share your corrections with other users the subsequent time you connect the GPS to the TomTom website.

It has preloaded map of the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. TomTom.com website has plentifully more information.
