Is it not detrimental to use a usual fluorescent bulb contained by a three channel street lamp?
Answers: I take it that you plan the CFR bulbs with the standard screw-in groundwork. The quick answer is, yes, they're past the worst.
Normally a bulb has two connections, the threads, and an isolated dot at the substructure. The bult has a single filament surrounded by it. The lamp connector is alike.
For 3-way lamps, the bulb have an EXTRA isolated dot on the base, and the storm lantern socket does, too, to match it. There are two filament in the bulb, but by switching the dots contained by the socket, you can light up filament #1 for one brightness, filament #2 for a greater brightness, or both filaments (as a #3 choice) for even MORE brightness.
You can put a regular single bulb into a 3-way hurricane lantern and it works fine. You just hold one setting, though, when it's on. CFR's don't have filament, but use a gas which takes up the entire bulb to provide oil lamp. Hence, there are no 3-way flourescent bulbs (yet).
So a CFR will work lately like a regular single bulb within a 3-way lamp.
