Can I use a regular GPS system for my coup¨¦ on my motorcylce too?
Answers: I know that Tomtom and Garmin make separate product lines for motorcycle GPS requirements. I think the biggest differences are within the mount, vibration resistance and rainproof design. Car GPS units are not rainproof and I think that alone would trademark them not suitable for motorcycles.
But, if you are willing to custom build a special mount next to shock, and weatherproof housing, anything is possible...
Yes, the main difference between the Garmin Auto GPSs (Nuvi) and the Motorcycle GPSs (Zumo) is one of rainproof ratings, and slight changes to the UI to produce it more glove friendly. After doing quite a bit of research, I terminated up going with an Auto component (Nuvi 660). It has better battery-operated life, and the change to the UI don't make that much difference. As far as not one waterproof, I save a ziploc bag surrounded by my saddle bags. If it looks close to it might rain, I put on the Nuvi's "raincoat", and turn about my business. As in that are no moving part contained by the unit, trembling should not be a problem.
If the waterproof issue is a concern to you, some of the Garmin Marine unit also will perform on road routing, and are impermeable. The Garmin GPSMap 276c is waterproof, and will allow you to turn by turn routing. You can also find a Ram Mount (see next paragraph) to mount it on the motorcycle. Unfortunatly, you confer up the touch screen.
Check out the Ram Mounting system. They own mounts for most of the GPS units out here as well as lots other devices. I use a handle pub mount with a cradle designed for my Nuvi 660. It works highly well as it keep it behind my windscreen so that the GPS is protected. (Note: Garmin ships Ram Mount components beside the Zumo Motorcycle units)
