Real networks and Pocket Tunes variety the two best programs that I know of. (I like Pocket tunes better than Real). My E come bundled with the Real Networks program, and My Treo come with the Pocket Tunes. You can buy fancier version, but I've been bright and breezy with the bundled version. There may be free or open source programs, but I've never be curious enough to find out.
Basically, I merely use one of those SD card readers to verbs MP3 or WMA files to the SD card. No fancy 'synching' via itunes or anything like that (though the Palm devices support that). Just copy them to the card and insert the card into the Palm device.
