Answers: The way to install programs onto your Palm from a desktop is to HotSync. A HotSync will synchronize what is on your handheld near what is stored on your computer. Any contacts, tasks, notes, etc. on any your computer or your handheld that is not on the other will gain copied over.
That being said, what you are essentially unfolding your computer when you "install" a Palm software on your desktop is that you want to add it to the queue of things to synchronize during the subsequent HotSync. Some software takes a while to HotSync because it attempts to download updates and such from the internet (medical programs especially, to keep hold of up-to-date). Some large database programs close to medical stuff does take reasonably a while to install/sync, so I would recommend walking away and coming back latter (if you stare at it you'll get too impatient!). But it should be working.
During a HotSync, the status chain on your Palm may be a step or two behind so preserve in mind what step it say it is doing may not be totally accurate.
