Just wondering how does a pattern page know which device is viewing it, a majority pc/browser or a mobile device?

how the website know whether to deliver the normal page or a mobile page to the viewing device?

Answers:    The chief information, such as the type and ID of the communicating devices, is exchanged prior to the sending or receiving of information. This is called "handshaking". The mobile device will make clear to the server that it is indeed a mobile device, not a PC, and a scaled down, 'mobile friendly' journal of the page will be sent to the device.
