DVD-DL stands for Dual Layer, objective it can hold more than your standard 4.7GB DVD. I believe it can hold upwards of 8.7GB instead. But you need to own a DVD Recorder that suppoorts DL or Dual Layer.
DVD-R just stands for Recordable DVD drive. Meaning you can write once to it. A DVD-RW mode you can right to the same DVD more than once.
