Question just about TiVo?
Answers: Pioneer and Toshiba both used to make Tivos that come with free Tivo Basic (fewer bells and whistle than Premium Tivo, but perfectly functional). I hold a Pioneer that came beside this feature, and I love it. You can find used models on ebay (just look into for Tivo Basic). It might be just the point for your son.
No not true, if you or he cant afford the 1 or 2 year fee basically buy a DVD R or VCR/DVD Recorder.
If you pay the duty, he just hooks it up to the internet or phone procession jack.
If I remember right, it will record but you can't do the season pass and such... basically it will function as a vcr does. BORING!
I suggest going on ebay and turn upside down for used ones that have lifetime subscriptions running on them. They are non-transferable (machine to machine) but the ownership doesn't issue on that. The lifetime sub follows the machine.
If you are ready to put in oodles of money into it... they usually run specials this time of year where on earth you can get the dvr AND a lifetime subscription. Lifetime isn't unanimously available anymore. I got an email from them the other time pushing the Series 3 HD with cable card and a lifetime subscription for nearly $800... other models be higher.
Lifetime subscription when it be a regular option to buy equaled a moment ago over 3 years in price.
