Clear QAM and OTA HD use coaxial cable (and are HD), but I've been told the coaxial TV Out on an HD set top box would not output contained by HD. I have a PCI HD tv tuner card that supports clear QAM and ATSC. Is it true that connecting the coax TV Out from the STB to the tuner card would not result within HD recordings? If so, is there a component-to-coax cable that will allow me to account in HD? It would be nice to transcript cable HD channels w/o renting the company's DVR.
Answers: No, because set-top boxes don't output within HD on the coax output. To do so would raise the cost of the box, and would allow for "unsecure" digital signals to be capture and recorded (and after copied and shared), which is something the content providers are doing everything to prevent.
The only PC equipment available to text cable in HD (forgetting anything may be available on QAM) are cable card PCs. There are very few of these around right very soon. The QAM can be recorded by using your QAM card and connecting the cable directly to your tuner (not through the box). You'll capture whatever your cable supplier furnishes surrounded by the clear.
