How can i compress video files to fit on a dvd?

then i want to burn it onto a dvd-r and keep watch on it on a normal dvd player.

Further compression of AVI files will inaugurate to degrade characteristic but you can do it.

U can use Super audio video converter from eRightsoft, its a freeware and supports almost all the medium formats.
The open source, i.e. free, program called DVD Flick at http://www.dvdflick.net/ can do this.
