Answers: Both. But as the person who responded above me indicated the nouns method determines if the result is HD or not.
In other words you can make Heroes be an HD program on NBC but if you are watching it on an NBC analog affiliate next it is not HD that you are watching is it analog SD instead (standard definition not high definition). So surrounded by essence a 16 by 9 aspect 1080i program is being downconverted to 480i for nouns and consequently being fit into a 4 by 3 aspect ratio signal.
The number of pixels surrounded by the original 1080i program is 1920 by 1080 whereas the number of pixels surrounded by the transmission is 640 by 480 (sometimes 720 by 480 or 702 by 480 but we won't seize into that since 640 makes it 4 by 3).
If you do the math the 1920 pixels horizontally across the peak are now reduced to 640 pixels which is one-third the number of pixels (this is the foundation why I stuck with 640). So if you hold the aspect correct the image that be 1920 by 1080 on the HDTV now become 640 by 360 (1080 divided by 3) on the SDTV 4 by 3 screen departure 60 pixels above it and 60 pixels below it black (480 minus 360 equals 120 and 120 divided by 2 equals 60).
The transmission. If the picture be originally on film, specifically already HD, but if transmitted via standard 480i television, the HD information is lost.
