Recommend a Good DVD Player next to Recorder?

Hi,

I am planning to buy a DVD Player with Recording competency (For Recording TV Programs). Please suggest a good model and I want it to play scratched discs near out any problem.

I prefer anything but Sony. Sony have given me nothing but problems next to short life and poor video talent.
