Panasonic DVD Recorder - Won't spot disc contained by the tray. What could be the problem?

Have a Panasonic DVD Recorder - Model DMR-ES46V that won't recognize disc within the tray. Also it thinks there's a disc within the tray when there isn't. What could be the problem? Thanks for your responses.

Answers:    Mine did one and the same thing. One of 2 things.
First past its sell-by date, its the brand. Change the brand dvds your using. Mine used to love CompUSA discs.
Second, is there a code on the front of the piece of equipment that reads something similar to U89 (I cant recall the numbers)
If so, the drive is inert :(
Its common on the Panasonics.
I am not putting the brand down. I loved mine. But it died too.

Who thumbs downed me and why?
is it within your computer? It could be that the anti-piracy software has disabled it.
