Where can I find a DVR/PVR box that doesn't require subscriptions?

I'm looking to buy a Digital Video Recorder (an "appliance" not a PC) that will work with free programing guides and NOT require monthly subscriptions. Any accepted wisdom?

Answers:    Hi theintrovertedgeek,

I think the Pioneer is a highly good component.

You can see it and read about it here - http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-DVR-550H-S...

DVRs that are a component of a personal computer are the singular way to digitally register television in need a subscription. "Stand-alone" DVRs (ones that use a guide to record) will usually only work near one guide, there purely isn't enough plea to build a stand-alone that will work with any guide. I recommend any DVR from Hauppage to use surrounded by a computer if you choose that route because they have a free guide specifically accessible from the internet.

Lastly, if you don't have the space for strange hardware on your computer you can easily buy a out bones desktop, stick a large HDD within it, stick the DVR card in it, and name it a stand-alone DVR the total of which will probably cost you less than owning a TiVO.
