Any burner you purchase today will work with -R medium.
I prefer AOpen burners but they can be difficult to find in a retail store. Avoid Pioneer. Sony is moral but expensive for what you get.
To kind a backup copy of a CD you purchased you will want a program like "CloneCD".

You cannot rewrite the dvd unless it is rewritable.
