What is the difference between a DVR and a DVD recorder?

I want to record shows that I usually study, but now near my job I am working steady evenings. I abhor my VHS, it never works right. My friend says she have a DVR and she loves it, but when I looked it up it says that at hand is a fee respectively month to use that. I don't think thats what she have. Then I saw there are presently DVD recorders....if I want to cassette 3 shows a week, and dont want to pay extra fees, which would work best for me?
