Free dvd software that can copy protected dvd's?

anybody knows a free downloadable dvd software that can copy protected dvd's? or software that can convert dvd format .vob movies into any notebook readable and compressed format, like .mp4, .mpeg, .avi, .mov, etc?

I freshly want to make a backup of my artistic dvd movies so I can use this if friends wants to borrow the movie and I don't own to give the imaginative set. I don't want to see scratches and fingerprint results on my discs. The least I can do is compress it on dvd or portable hdd so they can survey it on their pc's instead.

Answers:    There is this great (in my opinion) little program that is free and works on most systems (multi-platform). Its call VLC. You can get it from the first source below, assuming you're a microsoft window user.

I found a tutorial on youtube a while back where on earth a guy puts together some pretty good presentations. It will bearing you through your dilemma. I honestly don't remember about the copy protection though.
For conversion, here are a lot of converters that you can use. But you requirement some knowledge for video encoding and converting (like what format is better, the bitrate, and filesize etc..). You can use software resembling Virtual Dub, Easy-realmedia converter (convert to realmedia format) & many more.

For smaller number hassle (and best to solve your problem -- copy "PROTECTED" dvds), you can use DVD SmartRipper, it can rip protected dvds, after ripping, what you need is purely a Nero software and then burn it to a DVD-playable disc. ;)
