Interference between bands today is not as severe as it used to be because of better design and separation of the frequency band but it does occur. Unfortunately boosters usually solely amplify the entire signal - interference and all.
My first suggestion would be to (nicely) ask the ambulance station for assistance. Their electronics group can likely extend you free filters to get hold of rid of the problem.
The FCC has strict rules roughly interference with other band.
For self help it depends on your source. Since you mentioned a unknown aerial I surmise you enjoy an outside antenna. A filter is your best option. If the ambulance station can't give a hand you go to Radio Shack and ask them to recommend a filter.
