My JVC DVD player won't play some of the discs I burn - is it time to upgrade my player? Or is it the discs?

Answers:    Check out http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers. Look up your player on the list, it will make a contribution you info about what medium and formats your particular player happen to like or dislike.
could be the discs.
Mine individual plays DVD+R
my girlfriend's only plays DVD-R

My dad's plays both and Dual Layer.

Give respectively a try (the dual layer's are expensive. don't worry, i don't use those anyway) and see what happen.

P.S. it never hurts to upgrade, as long as you can afford it.
If it plays some but not others then you could be forgetting to finalise the discs,Or it could be the discs themselves, Dirty/scratched or even the wrong type. Don't regard it's the player if it plays some.
