Answers:    VCR is antiquated technology, and black diamond is an off brand. Nothing approaching an offbrand company, making antiquated technology. I'd say do yourself a favor and catch a cheap tivo, or DVR system and ditch the VCR.
It may just not be working. VCRs stopped human being good part around 10 years ago. I don't know if you can still find a VCR anymore to replace it.

If you want, you can try to clean the head with a cleaning tackle, and see if that works.
