Can I converrt Wmv/Avi video files to play on DVD player?

I have a Sony DVD player that will play DVD files but it seem to prefer DivX files or a compatible format can I convert these files into ones that are compatible with the player?

There are a bunch of widen source programs that can convert video to the preferred format. One I like is "handbrake". Easy to use. Just google handbrake software.
