Answers:    it is either defective or is not connected properly if it is connected next to no cable or sattelite box it should be coax to the input and output to the tv if you have a cable or satellite if your using component (red, green, blue) form sure there not crossed it is adjectives to cross the green and blue either on the cable or sit box or the dvd recorder if your using composite better known as rca label sure the yellow is connected to the ashen on both boxes if the connections are correct or if your using hdmi the dvd recorder is probably defective one last trial would be to take connections rotten dvd recorder and connect directly to tv this will rule out the cable or sat box or cable
