Out of curiosity, if someone had an not permitted analog cable hook-up to their home and he/she wanted to find tivo service (legally), would it work? Or would tivo require proof that the cable connection/signal is legitimate? If it did work, is within a chance that the relatives at Tivo would "snitch" to the person's cable company if they learned that he/she wasn't paying for cable?

TiVo will work. It doesn't verify or contained by any way check what service you take. You will tell TiVo where on earth you live by zip code. TiVo will after show a menu of all available services and you select the one you "have" from the inventory.
