Normally these transmissions are in the UHF range - 300–3000 MHz. A parabolic antenna is a type of microwave antenna that can transcieve various RF signals, however they require a low-noise block converter (LNB, for low-noise block, or sometimes LNC, for low-noise converter) Mounted on brackets at the dish's focal point is a device called a feedhorn. This feedhorn is essentially the front-end of a waveguide that gathers the signals at or near the focal point and 'conducts' them to a LNB. The job of the LNB is to use the superheterodyne principle to take a wide block (or band) of relatively high frequencies, amplify and convert them to similar signals carried at a much lower frequency (called intermediate frequency ). These lower frequencies travel through cables with much less attenuation of the signal, so there is much more signal left on the satellite receiver end of the cable. It is also much easier and cheaper to design electronic circuits to operate at these lower frequencies, rather than the very high frequencies.
