TV--repair or throw away? Also, a (probably stupid) question about digital television?
The TV suddenly stopped working the other day. Lots of noise and a dark static screen, but absolutely no reception. I disconnected it from the VCR to see if that would make a difference. It didn't. Even videos do not appear on the screen after I reattached the VCR. Any thoughts on what's wrong and wheher I should just junk it?
Assuming I get a new TV, I still don't want cable or dish. If I buy an SDTV with a digital tuner instead of an HDTV, I assume I will still get broadcasts advertised in HDTV. Please tell me if I'm wrong. Also, is the difference in SDTV and HDTV so great as to be worh the extra hundreds of dollars?
Thanks for any feedback.
Answer:
Sanyo had a lot of trouble with tuners. Try hooking your VCR/DVD player up using your A/V inputs (if you have them) yellow-video / red & white - audio. If that works hook your rabbit ears into the VCR/DVD " in from ant" jack & select your channels with your vcr remote>
Usually the Sanyos are just junk, especially the new tvs from walmart, lots of people have trouble just getting to the year (under warranty).
Don't just junk it, so something cool with it. Drop it off the roof or something.
No standard analog signals will be provided for the older generations of televisions a few years from now.
Don't buy a SDTV. You would have to obtain a signal conversion box for about the same price you would be paying for the TV.
Invest in an HDTV that supports the 720p or 1080p progressive scan standards. Interlaced or i standards won't look as good in the long haul.
If money matters, select a screen size you can afford.
