Answer:
If you want a tv that will last by putting a moderate amount of money to and dont have issues with watching it at extreme angles, then I would recomend the projection. If you watch at wierd angles, or need to be able to mount it on the wall, go with the LCD.
I would go with the projection personally. The thing most likely to go out is going to be bulbs, which when replaced (for relatively cheap) will restore the image quality to like new. It will last longer than the LCD if you are willing to do this. It is cheaper too, for a bigger screen.
It all depends where you out the TV at. if you putting it in a room with lots of windows and sunlight coming in you would want get the LCD flat panel. A darker room would make the rear projection look nice. Looks wise the 40" is nicer i love the look of the Sony LCD especially the XBR2. Plus the bulb for the rear projection is about $400 if it goes. I work at sears and i sell TV's i see for my own eyes every day what sets really are better and it is the LCD's
Either set would be a great selection, since Sony is just plain great stuff. If you get the RPTV, I would suggest an extended service plan that covers the lamp (some plans do not). In 5 years time, the plan will have paid for itself in the lamp replacements. Where preference is concerned, do you want to put the set on the wall, or on a stand? If it's the wall, obviously the LCD flat set is what you should buy. Personally, I like the RPTV LCD. They show a much smoother picture than their direct view LCD counterparts. Both set are LCD based display technology, one is direct view (flat panel) the other is RPTV (Rear Projection TV), Sony does not use DLP technology, as far as I know. At least we don't sell them, if they do.
