What does a hdmi cable do?

do you need a hdmi cable for a ps3

Answer:
An HDMI cable uses a digital signal to transmit video as good as 1080p quality. It has the same capability as DVI cables. The difference between HDMI and DVI is that HDMI also transmits HD quality sound (up to 7.1 surround sound), all in the same cable. This appears to be the best method for optimal HD picture and sound, although component cables (an analog version for video only) sometimes can have comparable ouput. You often have to just experiment. You do not absolutely need HDMI for PS3, but it is the preferred method for 1080p resolution games.
