Why is my Sony TV picture turning green?
Answer:
Because it is jealous
Seriously, I'm not sure what you mean when you say that
it is turning green, is this an intermittent thing were the
screen flashes and is a bright green? or does it appear to
just be predominately green.
A sudden flash and then a bright green (red or blue for that
matter) is an indication of a cathode to heater short, the heater is the picture tube filament (the light you see near
where the plug on the back picture tube if you take the
back off of the set) and the cathode is the first element
in the tube and the basis for all electron flow. A cathode
to heater short (also called H-K short) is serious, there
are times when a TV repairman can burn the short out
by using a CRT restoration device called a rejuvinator but
there is the risk that the rejuvination process can totally
destroy the CRT, the risk is acceptable because if it can
not be burned out CRT replacement is necessary.
That is the bad news, if your set is just predominately green
you may be able to adjust the bias, normally on the back
of the set you will see either small holes or colored knobs
(red, green and blue) coming from the back of the set, there
should also me a switch that says service, slide the service
switch in to the service position, your screen will collapse
to a thin line (probably green), the red, green and blue knobs
should be turned all the way down.
Starting with the red knob, rotate the knob until you get a
visible (not real bright) red line, next rotate the green knob
until the line turns orange, finally rotate the blue knob
until the line becomes white, slide the serivce switch back
to the normal position and hopefully this will take care
of you problem. If not call a TV repairman as you likely
have circuit problems such as an IC , burnt resistor or
defective capacitor
EDIT:
The first poster brought up another thought, is the color
just a splotch of green?
If this is true, then what poster #1 said about having the
speakers to close to the CRT can cause this, move the
speakers away, turn your TV off for about half an hour
to allow the degaussing thermistor cool to normal
temperature and then turn the set back on.
To the 3rd poster (just after mine) The only tube in
modern day Televisions is the Picture Tube or CRT
you can not change just one unless this is a projection
type set which this particular set is not, the CRT consists
of 3 separate guns all contained within the CRT.
Not trying to criticize you just to educate you
could be not enough power getting to it. could be speakers are recieving too much power. make sure external speakers aren't close to it. make sure everything is plugged in good. could be bad cables. try changing cables. if that doesn't work return it.
The only problem here is that the colour tube in your TV has gone bad and needs to be changed. It is the colour tube of the TV which displays the colours on the TV so if there is any problem in your colour display then your colour tube definitely needs to be changed.
You could be describing a low emission pic tube , just a gut feeling when you mention orange faces a green background which says poor grey scale . If only we could see your TV screen then we would have a better idea ! However for what its worth I have over 40 years experience on fixing TVs and one acquires a sort of sixth sense about a fault .

Change your input signal source to a non used position and see if you get a pure Black display. In order to adjust the color drive signals for your Sony, you need the service manual to get the key codes to put the information adjustments on the screen using your remote control. On my set, you depress Vol +, 5, Display and Power within 2 seconds to give you that menu. Good Luck
