Are Extended Warranties on LCD TV's worth it?
Answer:
Absolutely! I purchased an LCD from Circuit City two summers ago in June. By first week of September the picture was black while the sound still worked. Took it back to CC and needless to say they said TS. My next path was the manufacturer which was a joke. I had to send the TV, at my expense, to one of their authorized service centers. This service center turned out to be some mom and pop shop two states away. At the risk of never seeing my TV again I decided to take no action with the repair shop and chalk it up to a lesson learned. One year from the month I purchased the TV CC sent me a note asking if I would like to purchase an extended warranty for $37. I did so and returned the television as soon as I had paperwork in hand. Not only did they replace the TV but they refunded the balance of the one year warranty of $35. If I would have just purchased this upfront I would not have had to wait for 9 months to enjoy the TV. The replacement works fine with no problems to this day.
i do not think so, think they are a bit of a rip off
YES! But be careful where you get them from - Argos was the cheapest for extended warranties - if the matrix goes inside the TV - you might as well bin it and buy a new one - the cost of repair is more than the cost of buying a new one
No extended warranties are worth it.
NO!! An extended warranty is nothing more than a way to extract vast amounts of money for little in return. If your tv goes wrong through damage or such you can claim on house insurance. The question you have to ask is, is 50 to £100 per year over 4 years good value compared to replacement parts or rep[lacing the whole item, most consumer magazines in the UK like, Which advise against extended warranties...
No, they are very expensive and cost more than repairs would most of the time.
There are many factors to consider when buying an extended warranty
Firstly it very much depends on how much you spent on your LCD in the first place. If you spend well over 800 pounds then it is worth it. However, if you spend between 400 or 500 hundred then no way. As you could probably buy a new one for little more than the cost of a warranty.
Other factors to take into consideration cheaper LCD TV's pixels seem to decline quicker however, the life of an LCD TV at present is only suppose to be 7-8 years. And as new technology is improving and manufacturers are already designing slimmer CRT TV which gives a much clearer picture anyway buying an exteneded warranty maybe throwing good money after bad.
ARGOS are offering an extended warranty included in the purchase price of some of their LCD's so this might be worth looking into before deciding or have you already purchased a new TV?
I recently bought a new LCD with a manufacturers I year guarantee and a 2 year extended warranty included in the price.
There some good deals and it pays to shop around first before deciding..
PS I would not buy an extended warranty for washing machines etc...a complete conn.
YES, in this case, but very few others.
Get a screen protector first thing! Damaged LEDs will leave spots and such that don't go away. If you have experience with laptops, you will know what to expect.
Stay away from companies you don't know well or have never seen in television before without a lot of research. LCD and plasma can have a lot of problems from certain makes and aren't always easy to get taken care of.
For a small screen, perhaps. Many people are opting towards ceiling mounted projectors also. The lamps are very expensive and they can be a problem also, so the CRT projector sales on eBay etc have started to become expensive also, especially working used models.
Front projection big screen might be a good option in lieu of a screen projector. It's probably a less expensive deal over 35 inches and the boards more of a pontential hassle than the tubes. DLP and OLED aren't recommended by me yet--too early.
forget the warranty, waste of money, the house insurance will cover it..
There are several ways to protect your investment.
Most homeowners insurance policies require a rider to protect electronics.
I always recomend a power center with a connected
equipment warranty.
If the extended is more than 20% of cost of TV I usually dont get one. However if you plan to finance the TV it is a good idea to get one.
Make sure you understand exactly what you are geting for the price and any representations are made in writing.
(First of all, let me say that no homeowner's insurance is going to pay just because your TV doesn't work anymore.)
Most electronic things, if they are going to go bad will go bad in a couple of weeks or at the very most, a couple of months. (Also, many times if you go to the manufactures web site, they can sometimes tell you the 'tricks' to fixing the problem.)
SO, I say skip the extended warranty---that's just a way 'they' really make money.
The short answer to this is YES. LCDs aren't as buggy as plasmas, but they do fail. I work for a high-end electrical retailer, and we constantly get phone calls from people who say their three year old LCD has dead pixels or has gone a funny colour or has inexplicably broken down. Half of these people didn't pay the £150 for a 5 year warranty because 'Panasonics don't break down', and they're lumbered with a £500 repair bill or have to spend £1,000 a new TV, the other half get to be really smug.
