My CRT TV set is getting magnetized spots on it (discoloration) and I was wondering if at hand was a instrument I could degauss it myself without taking it contained by or going to buy a degaussing coil. In essence, is there a homebrew agency to do it?
Answers: Using a variable speed drill (and a hole bore bit) one can use powerful (rare earth) magnets to degauss a display.
Basically, you would cartridge the magnets to the drill bit (if they don't stick well on their own, although I would recommend tape them just within case.) By varying the speed of the drill and distance, the hold will dissipate.
This process generally take a few minutes. You'll continually move the magnets closer and farther away (tending toward farther the longer you have it going.)
